The Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion 13.5kWh DC Battery is designed to increase the storage capacity of an existing Tesla Powerwall 3 energy storage system. This official Tesla DC expansion battery provides an additional 13.5kWh of usable energy storage, making it easy to expand your home battery system as your energy requirements grow.

A single Tesla Powerwall 3 supports up to 20kW of DC solar input, delivers 11.04kW of continuous AC output, stores 13.5kWh of energy and can start heavy electrical loads rated up to 185A LRA. This allows one Powerwall 3 to comfortably support the power demands of most homes while maximising solar self-consumption and providing reliable backup power.

Designed with scalability in mind, the Tesla Powerwall 3 system enables installers and homeowners to add multiple Powerwall 3 Expansion Batteries or additional Powerwall 3 units. A fully expanded system can provide up to 44kW of continuous AC power and a total storage capacity of 94.5kWh, making it suitable for larger residential and light commercial energy storage applications.

Please Note: Accessories are required to complete the installation. The Tesla Powerwall 3 Expansion Harness must be used to provide the electrical connection between the Tesla Powerwall 3 and the Expansion Battery.
Important: This product is a Tesla Powerwall 3 DC Expansion Battery only. It is not a standalone battery system and requires an existing Tesla Powerwall 3 together with a Tesla Gateway to operate.

A 0.5, 2 or 4 m harness for the distance

Stacking puts up to three Expansions directly behind the Powerwall 3, and that layout is floor-mount only. The stacking option includes the short 0.5 m harness it uses. Wall-mounted Expansions can sit further away, so the wall-mounting option leaves the harness to you: choose 0.5 m, 2 m or 4 m for the run between units.

What it does to the system

One Powerwall 3 charges at up to 5 kW on its own. With Expansion units fitted, charging rises to 8 kW (AC and DC). A full system of four Powerwall 3 units and three Expansions stores 94.5 kWh. The Expansion runs between 52 V and 92 V DC and is not field serviceable.

Expansion questions

Can it run without a Powerwall 3?

No. It is a DC expansion battery only and has no inverter of its own.

How heavy is it?

110 kg for the unit alone, 118.5 kg wall-mounted with the glass front cover and bracket. It measures 1105 × 609 × 168 mm.

Does it suit outdoor installs?

Yes. It is IP67 and rated for −20 °C to 50 °C, indoor or outdoor.

Which certifications does it carry?

IEC 62619, IEC 62933-5-2 and IEC 61000-6-1/-3.
