Fox ESS Fox AC 5.0kW Charger Inverter Gen 2
Fox AC 5.0kW Charger Inverter Gen 2
Fox ESS AC1 Series charger inverter, Gen 2 — Adds a high-voltage Fox battery and an EPS output to a solar system that already works.
An AC-coupled battery inverter exists for one situation: there is already a working solar system, and replacing the inverter to add a battery would mean throwing away something that works. It sits on the AC side instead, charges the battery from the existing array or from the grid, and leaves the original inverter alone.
About the Fox ESS AC1 Series charger inverter, Gen 2
The AC1 Gen 2 is Fox's single-phase version. It charges a high-voltage Fox battery at up to 40 A, carries an EPS output rated at the full machine with a peak of 4,400 or 6,000 VA for sixty seconds, and switches in under 20 ms.
High voltage on the battery side is the reason it uses thinner cable than a 48 V retrofit for the same power, and it reaches 98.50 % charge efficiency from PV to battery and 97.00 % from battery to AC.
IP65 and wall mounted, naturally cooled at 35 dB, with up to ten units in parallel.
What does this work with?
This is an AC-coupled battery inverter: no PV input, a high-voltage Fox battery on the DC side and an EPS output for backup.
The battery is a Fox high-voltage stack, 80 – 480 V, at up to 40 A charge and discharge, over CAN. There is no PV input — the array stays on whatever inverter it is already on.
Battery, backup and metering
The details that decide whether this suits the system:
- No PV input. The AC1 shares a datasheet with the H1 hybrid, where the PV section is marked as applying to the hybrid only.
- Battery is lithium (LFP) at 80 – 480 V with a maximum charge and discharge current of 40 A, over CAN.
- EPS output is rated at the full machine, peaks for sixty seconds, and switches in under 20 ms. Up to ten units run in parallel.
- Battery charge efficiency from PV to battery is 98.50 % and discharge from battery to AC 97.00 %.
- Where batteries are installed side by side rather than stacked, Fox recommend the FE-HV2600-EXT-1M extension.
- 434 × 418 × 185 mm and 22 kg, wall mounted, IP65, natural cooling at 35 dB, standby under 15 W.
- −25 to +60 °C, 0 – 100 % humidity, 2,000 m. RS485, DRM, ripple control, USB and CAN; Wi-Fi standard with LAN and 4G optional.
Where this earns its place
The AC1 Series charger inverter, Gen 2 is specified most often for these jobs.
Things worth knowing about this listing
- Where batteries are installed side by side rather than stacked one on top of the other, Fox recommend the FE-HV2600-EXT-1M extension.
- Register the installation with Fox ESS to activate the extended product warranty. The warranty document on this listing has the terms.

Questions we get asked about this inverter
Can I connect solar panels to it?
No. The AC1 is AC coupled and has no PV input — that is what makes it a retrofit product. The array stays on the inverter it is already on.
Which battery does it take?
A Fox high-voltage stack in the 80 to 480 V window, at up to 40 A.
Will it give me backup?
Yes, an EPS output rated at the full machine with a sixty-second peak and a switch time under 20 ms.
Can I fit more than one?
Up to ten units in parallel.
Does it need anything for side-by-side batteries?
Fox recommend the FE-HV2600-EXT-1M extension when batteries are installed side by side rather than stacked.
