String, hybrid or microinverters?

A standard string inverter suits straightforward roofs with consistent orientation and minimal shading, and remains the most cost-effective route for solar-only systems. Hybrid inverters add a battery connection and are now the default choice for most new residential installations — fitting a hybrid today keeps storage as a simple later upgrade even if the battery is not installed on day one. Microinverters and power optimisers convert or condition power at panel level, making them the right answer for complex multi-aspect roofs, partial shading, or where panel-level monitoring and rapid shutdown are specified.

Sizing and compatibility

Inverter capacity should be matched to the array rather than simply maximised — modest DC oversizing of the array relative to the inverter's AC rating is normal practice and improves yield in low light. Check the maximum DC input, MPPT voltage window and string current limits on the datasheet against your panel configuration, and for hybrids confirm battery compatibility: high-voltage battery stacks in particular pair only with approved inverter models from the same ecosystem. G98/G99 grid connection requirements apply to UK installations depending on export capacity, and single-phase or three-phase supply will steer the model choice on larger systems.
