Overview

About the Solis S5-GC Commercial Three Phase

On a domestic roof, a failed string is an annoyance you spot on the app. On a 200 kW warehouse roof it is money leaking away for months before anyone notices, because the total still looks broadly right. That is the problem the S5-GC range is built around.

Every unit does intelligent string monitoring and a smart I-V curve scan, so the inverter itself tells you which string has changed shape and roughly why — shading, soiling, a failing module, a bad connector. Combined with AFCI arc-fault detection, that turns a commercial array from something you inspect annually into something that reports its own faults.

The range covers 25 kW to 60 kW with three to six MPP trackers, a 1,100 V system voltage and a DC/AC ratio above 150 %, which means fewer inverters for a given roof. Nighttime PID recovery is available as an option, which matters on large arrays where potential induced degradation quietly erodes yield over years.

For the installer

String design, certification and what is in the box

The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:

  • 3 to 6 MPP trackers depending on model, 32 A per tracker, 1,100 V maximum system voltage.
  • >150 % DC/AC ratio supported — design the array to the roof, not to the inverter nameplate.
  • Intelligent string monitoring and I-V curve scan built in; PID recovery optional.
  • Aluminium AC cable is supported on this range, which is a real saving at 60 kW.
  • 25 kW to 40 kW: integrated DC switch optional. 50 kW and 60 kW: integrated DC switch fitted as standard.
  • G98/G99, EN 50549-1 and G100 export limitation certificates are attached to these listings.
Applications

Where this inverter earns its place

The S5-GC Commercial Three Phase is specified most often for these jobs.

Warehouse and distribution roofsLarge uninterrupted roof planes where a handful of big inverters beats dozens of small ones.
Manufacturing and process sitesDaytime load that absorbs almost all generation on site, with no export constraint.
Agricultural buildingsBarn and shed roofs, often with the DNO capacity to match.
Solar car portsMultiple trackers suit the long low-current strings a car port produces.
Ground mount up to 1 MWMultiple units in parallel, monitored string by string.
Public sector estatesSchools, leisure centres and depots where reporting and fault visibility are contractual.
Battery and storage

Can I add a battery to this?

This is a grid-tied PV inverter. It converts solar DC into AC for the property and the grid, and it has no battery port. That is not a shortcoming — it is the right architecture for a system without storage, and it is why it costs what it does.

If storage is on the roadmap, you have two routes. Add an AC-coupled battery system alongside this inverter later, which works with any PV inverter and needs no change to what is already installed. Or choose a hybrid inverter now and pay for a battery port you will use in a year or two. We are happy to talk that trade-off through before you order.

Things worth knowing about this listing

These notes come from us and from the manufacturer, and they are the ones that most often cause a problem after delivery:
  • This inverter does not include a data logger, CT, meter or export power manager. The meter SOL-METER-3PH-CT3 is needed for export power control of a single inverter; for more than one inverter use the EPM3-5G-PLUS. The meter requires a data logging stick, while the EPM3-5G-PLUS has one built in. These items are sold separately.
  • This product must be installed by a qualified electrician or technician. All installations must adhere to local wiring regulations and standards. ClearRay Solar will not be held liable for any product malfunctions as a result of incorrectly installed systems.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked about this inverter

What does the I-V curve scan actually tell me?

It sweeps each string's current-voltage curve and compares the shape to the expected one. A dip in the middle usually means shading or a bypass diode; a shifted knee usually means soiling or degradation; a flat top usually means a failed module. It turns 'something is down' into 'string 7 needs looking at'.

Do I need PID recovery?

On a commercial array with modules at high system voltage, over years, potential induced degradation can cost several percent. Nighttime PID recovery reverses it while the array is idle. It is optional, and worth specifying on anything you expect to own for twenty years.

Can I run these in parallel?

Yes. Large arrays commonly use several units feeding a common AC panel, all reporting into SolisCloud.

Are they noisy?

They are fan cooled — the 50 kW and 60 kW models are quoted at under 55 dB(A). Site them away from occupied rooms.

Can I export limit them?

Yes, export power control is supported and G100 certificates are attached where they apply.
