Tesla Remote Energy Meter — How a Powerwall 3 sees the house when no Gateway is fitted.
A Powerwall needs to know what the house is importing and exporting before it can decide anything. On a backup installation the Gateway does that measuring. On a non-backup Powerwall 3 installation the Remote Energy Meter does it instead — cheaper, quicker to fit, and with no islanding.
About the Tesla Remote Energy Meter
The meter measures consumption, generation and import and export in real time, and reports to the Powerwall either over Wi-Fi or through the RS-485 harness. Wi-Fi keeps the wiring down; the harness is the one to specify when the meter and the Powerwall are close and the signal is not to be trusted.
The kit is the meter, a 200 A CT on a 1.5 m lead, a 600 mm voltage harness, an external antenna, an antenna extension and two mounting fasteners. The CTs, the CT extension and the RS-485 harness are also sold separately for jobs that need a second CT or a longer run.
One rule governs the cabling: CT leads cannot be spliced, and at most two extensions may be used, giving 8.5 m from the meter at the absolute maximum.
What does this fit?
This is the metering Powerwall 3 uses when there is no Gateway, and the extra metering when there is.
The Remote Energy Meter is for Powerwall 3 only, and only genuine Tesla Remote Energy Meter accessories work with it. Neurio meter equipment and other third-party meter accessories are not compatible.

What the job needs
The details that decide whether this suits the system:
- The meter is for Powerwall 3. Neurio meter equipment is not compatible with Powerwall 3 in any configuration.
- Communication to the Powerwall is Wi-Fi or RS-485. The RS-485 harness is 1.2 m.
- CTs are 200 A, 600 V insulation, 24 mm window, on a 1.5 m lead. No Y-splitter is available.
- CT leads cannot be spliced. A maximum of two 3.5 m extensions may be used, for 8.5 m total: 1.5 m lead plus 3.5 m plus 3.5 m.
- CT operating range is −30 °C to +85 °C, so a meter cupboard or an outside board is within spec.
- A meter-only installation has no backup. If the customer wants the house to stay on during an outage, the Gateway is the part to order.

Questions we get asked about this inverter
Does this give me backup power?
No. A Remote Energy Meter installation has no islanding device, so the house goes dark in an outage. A Backup Gateway 2 is what provides backup, and it can be added later.
Wi-Fi or the RS-485 harness?
Either. Wi-Fi saves running a cable; the 1.2 m RS-485 harness is the reliable option where the meter sits close to the Powerwall.
Can I extend the CT leads?
Up to two 3.5 m extensions, for 8.5 m in total. The leads must never be spliced.
Will it work with a Neurio meter or its CTs?
No. Powerwall 3 is not compatible with Neurio meter equipment, and only genuine Tesla Remote Energy Meter accessories should be used with this meter.
