About the Huawei SUN2000 KTL-M3 Smart PV Controller
Huawei call these Smart PV Controllers rather than inverters, and the naming is not just branding. The design goal is a commercial array that manages and diagnoses itself, so a 500 kW roof does not need a person walking it with a clamp meter.
Two engineering decisions stand out. The DC side is fuse free: eight inputs across four MPP trackers, each rated 26 A to 30 A with 40 A short-circuit capability, so there are no string fuses to blow, to find, or to replace at height. And AI-powered active arcing protection listens for the signature of a DC arc and shuts down — the failure mode that starts rooftop fires and does not self-extinguish.
Type II surge arresters on both DC and AC sides come as standard, along with PID recovery, string fault monitoring and insulation resistance detection. Peak efficiency is 98.7 % on the 30 to 40 kW models.
String design, certification and what is in the box
The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:
- Four MPP trackers, eight inputs, fuse-free DC design.
- 1,100 V maximum input, 200 V start-up, 200 – 1,000 V MPPT window, 600 V rated.
- 26 A per MPPT on the 30 to 40 kW models; 30 A per MPPT and 20 A per input on the 50 kW.
- Type II DC and AC surge arresters, PID recovery, arc fault protection and string fault monitoring all fitted.
- Monitoring over WLAN, Ethernet or 4G via a Smart Dongle (ordered separately); MBUS supported with an isolation transformer.
- Ripple receiver control supported for networks that use it.

Can I add a battery to this?
This is a grid-tied PV inverter. It converts solar DC into AC for the property and the grid, and it has no battery port. That is not a shortcoming — it is the right architecture for a system without storage, and it is why it costs what it does.
If storage is on the roadmap, you have two routes. Add an AC-coupled battery system alongside this inverter later, which works with any PV inverter and needs no change to what is already installed. Or choose a hybrid inverter now and pay for a battery port you will use in a year or two. We are happy to talk that trade-off through before you order.

Questions we get asked about this inverter
What does 'fuse free' mean and why does it matter?
The DC inputs are rated to handle the full short-circuit current of the strings connected to them, so no string fuses are needed. That removes a consumable, a failure point and a reason to send someone onto a roof.
What is active arcing protection?
Huawei's AI-based arc-fault detection. It monitors the DC waveform for the signature of an arc and shuts the inverter down. DC arcs are the fire risk on a PV array because, unlike AC, they do not self-extinguish at a zero crossing.
Do I need a Smart Dongle?
For remote monitoring, yes — WLAN/Ethernet or 4G, ordered separately. The inverter has built-in WLAN for commissioning via the FusionSolar app.
Can I use Huawei optimisers with it?
Yes, the SUN2000-450W-P2 and 600W-P work with these inverters over MBUS. Check the compatible-inverter list on the optimiser.
Battery?
These are PV inverters, not hybrids. Huawei's LUNA storage attaches to their hybrid ranges.

G98 covers installations up to 3.68kW per phase and is notified to your DNO after commissioning. Anything larger needs G99 approval agreed beforehand. We can flag which one your design falls under.
A hybrid inverter takes a DC-coupled battery directly. A standard string inverter needs an AC-coupled battery alongside it. The Technical Specifications show which type this unit is.
Yes, up to the maximum DC power figure in the specifications. Modest oversizing is normal practice - it lifts output in winter and at either end of the day, at the cost of brief clipping at midday peak.
An MPPT tracks the optimum operating point for a string of panels. You want one per roof orientation or pitch, because panels facing different directions on a single tracker drag each other down.
