The suffix is the part that catches people out. BST stands for boost, and a controller carrying it can raise the battery voltage to the inverter's start-up voltage. One without it cannot.
That turns into a hard rule. If the system has PV, the BST controller is always the one to fit. If it has no PV and fewer than nineteen battery modules, BST is still essential. Only a large, PV-free system can use the plain M2-0.5C.
The 0.5C in both names is the nominal charge and discharge rate: 157 A nominal on the 0.5C controllers against 314 A on the 1C.
