Installing an EV charge point in the UK

A home charge point is a fixed electrical installation and must be installed by a competent person to BS 7671. Two questions decide most of the job. First, does the unit have integrated PEN fault protection? On a TN-C-S (PME) supply that is what removes the need for an earth rod and the groundworks that come with it. Second, can the existing supply carry another 32 A? That is what load balancing exists to manage — the charger backs off when the house is drawing heavily, instead of taking out the main fuse.

Every charge point sold in Great Britain must also meet the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021, which require default off-peak charging hours, a randomised start delay, and measures against unauthorised access.
