Fox ESS 1.5kW S Series 1PH Single Tracker PV Inverter

Fox ESS · S Series (G2)

Fox ESS 1.5kW S Series 1PH Single Tracker PV Inverter

Fox ESS S Series (G2) — 5.4 kg, one tracker, and a 60 V start-up — the small-roof workhorse.

At 290 × 220 × 116 mm and 5.4 kg, the Fox ESS S Series is one of the smallest grid-tied inverters you can specify, and that is not a vanity statistic. It fits inside a meter cupboard, on the back of a garage door frame, or in the eaves of a loft conversion, which is often the difference between a job being straightforward and being a carpentry problem.

Overview

About the Fox ESS S Series (G2)

The electrical case for it is the 60 V start-up voltage and a 50 – 480 V MPPT window across the whole range. On a small array of six to ten modules, a high start-up threshold pushes the first generation of the day later and the last generation earlier. The S Series is awake for more of a British day than its size suggests.

Seven models from 700 W to 3.3 kW share one chassis and one accessory set, so a specifier running mixed roof sizes carries one spare, one bracket type and one commissioning process.

For the installer

String design, certification and what is in the box

The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:

  • One MPP tracker, one string, 14 A input and 18 A Isc across the whole range — identical DC design rules for every model.
  • IP65, natural convection, under 30 dB — safe to site indoors or out.
  • DC switch, AFCI and surge protection are all options rather than fitted as standard on this range; specify what the job needs.
  • Certified to G98, EN 50549-1 and VDE V 0126-1-1; monitoring by Wi-Fi or 4G dongle into FoxCloud.
  • RS485, meter/CT input and an ISO alarm output are provided as standard.
Applications

Where this inverter earns its place

The S Series (G2) is specified most often for these jobs.

Small terraced and semi-detached roofsSix to ten panels on one plane.
Meter cupboard installsThe smallest footprint in the range at 290 × 220 mm.
Loft and eaves mounting5.4 kg goes up a loft ladder in one hand.
Rent-a-roof and social housingLowest capital cost per property on standard house types.
Garden offices and outbuildingsIP65 lets it live at the array.
Array extensionsAdd a second small array on its own inverter rather than restringing the first.
Battery and storage

Can I add a battery to this?

This is a grid-tied PV inverter. It converts solar DC into AC for the property and the grid, and it has no battery port. That is not a shortcoming — it is the right architecture for a system without storage, and it is why it costs what it does.

If storage is on the roadmap, you have two routes. Add an AC-coupled battery system alongside this inverter later, which works with any PV inverter and needs no change to what is already installed. Or choose a hybrid inverter now and pay for a battery port you will use in a year or two. We are happy to talk that trade-off through before you order.

Things worth knowing about this listing

These notes come from us and from the manufacturer, and they are the ones that most often cause a problem after delivery:
  • You must register the installation with Fox ESS online to activate the 10 year product warranty. Without registration it is 5 years as standard. See the warranty document in the Documents tab for the registration link and the full terms.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked about this inverter

Does it include a DC isolator?

On this range the DC switch is an option rather than standard. Check the specific SKU, and budget for an external isolator if it is not fitted.

One tracker — when is that a problem?

When your array faces two ways, or part of it is shaded and part is not. On a single clean pitch, one tracker is exactly right and you are not paying for hardware you cannot use.

Can I add a battery?

Not to the S Series — it is grid-tied only. Fox's hybrid ranges are the route to storage, or an AC-coupled battery alongside.

Is it G98 or G99?

G98 for anything up to 3.68 kW on a single phase, which covers every model in this range. That is a notification rather than an application, so no waiting on the DNO.

How is it monitored?

FoxCloud, over an optional Wi-Fi or 4G dongle, with an LCD and touch key on the unit itself.
