About the Fox ESS PQ1 stackable all-in-one with EQ5000 storage

The PQ1 is not a wall-hung inverter with a battery next to it. It is a floor-standing tower: the power unit sits on top and EQ5000 modules stack beneath it, with the DC and comms cabling made at the factory rather than on site. That removes the battery cabling, the comms cabling and most of the commissioning.

The battery warming function is the detail that matters in a British winter. Lithium cells cannot be charged below 0 °C without damage, so an unheated outdoor battery refuses to charge on the coldest mornings — exactly when the overnight tariff is cheapest. The PQ1 warms its own cells.

IP66 for outdoor use, a 63 A integrated bypass for whole-house backup, a switchover under 4 ms, and up to three towers in parallel.

Which inverter will run this battery?

This is a complete PQ1 tower: the all-in-one power unit on top and the EQ5000 battery modules stacked beneath it.

There is no separate inverter to choose — the PQ1 power unit in this package is the hybrid inverter, the battery management and the EPS supply, and the EQ5000 modules stack under it with the DC cabling made at the factory. The stack takes two to six modules, so capacity can be added later up to that limit. The Package Contents block on this page is the definitive list of what ships.

Stack rules, cabling and what else the job needs

The details that decide whether this battery suits the system:

  • The stack takes two to six EQ5000 modules, 9.84 to 29.52 kWh. Fox's compatibility matrix lists the EQ5000 against the PQ1 and not the CQ7.
  • Battery window 80 – 500 V. Maximum battery charge power is 12,000 W across the range; maximum charge and discharge current is 50 A.
  • Minimum battery voltage at full AC load rises with the inverter: 78 V on the 3.7 kW, 105 V on the 5.0, 165 V on the 8.0, 207 V on the 10.0 and 247 V on the 12.0. A two-module stack bottoms out at 116 V and a four-module stack at 232 V, so check the pairing before promising full output at low state of charge.
  • Depth of discharge 90 %. 4.92 kWh a module nominal, 4.43 kWh usable.
  • 3.7 and 5.0 kW have two MPP trackers, 6.0 kW has three, 8.0 kW and above have four, at 8,000 W, 20 A and 25 A Isc each.
  • EPS load start capability is 122 A for 2 seconds with bypass to 63 A. Switch time under 4 ms.
  • Floor mounted. The power unit is 570 × 420 × 380 mm and 35 kg; the modules stack beneath it. IP66.
  • 3.7 to 6.0 kW are convection cooled under 35 dB; 7 kW and above use fans under 50 dB. Battery warming and AFCI are both optional; the DC switch is fitted.
  • The datasheet's grid regulation row quotes AS/NZS 4777.2:2020. For a UK G98 or G99 application ask us for the current Fox certificate that matches your firmware and we will send it with the order.

Things worth knowing about this listing

These notes come from us and from the manufacturer, and they are the ones that most often cause a problem after delivery:
  • The PQ1 tower takes two to six EQ5000 modules. The power unit carries the battery management, which is why the package lists slave modules and no master.
  • This pairing is battery-limited at low state of charge. Fox quote a minimum battery voltage at full AC load of 247 V for the 12.0 kW PQ1, and a 2-module EQ5000 stack falls to 116 V at the bottom of its window — so the tower will not hold full output on a nearly empty battery. Add modules if you need rated power across the whole range.

What exactly is in the box?

The Package Contents block on this page is the definitive list: the PQ1 power unit and the EQ5000 battery modules that go under it.

Why are the modules listed as slaves?

On the PQ1 the power unit carries the battery management, so the stack beneath it is made of slave modules. There is no separate master to buy.

Can I add battery later?

Yes, up to six modules. Check the minimum battery voltage at full AC load for your inverter size first — on the 12 kW it is 247 V, so a small stack will limit output near the bottom of the battery.

Which battery does it take?

Fox EQ5000 modules, two to six. Fox's UK compatibility matrix does not list the CQ7 against the PQ1, so do not plan on one.

Is it really all-in-one?

The inverter and battery are one stacked unit with the cabling between them made at the factory. You still supply the AC side, the array and the meter.

Usable energy is the nominal capacity multiplied by the depth of discharge, and both figures are in the Technical Specifications. Most current lithium batteries allow 90% or more.

It needs to appear on your inverter manufacturer's approved battery list and the voltage ranges have to match. Send us your inverter model and we'll confirm compatibility before you order.

Most systems stack in modules up to a maximum number of units per installation, given in the datasheet. Keep to the same model, and buy the full stack together where budget allows.

Only where the IP rating and operating temperature range allow it - both are in the Technical Specifications. Cold reduces usable capacity, so a garage or utility space is usually the better location.

Yes, where the inverter supports timed or forced charging. Paired with a time-of-use tariff this is often the quickest route to a shorter payback.
