Huawei LUNA2000 Smart String ESS — 5 kWh a module, 100 % usable, pack-level optimisation and one power module per stack.

A battery pays for itself by moving energy in time: solar generated at midday and electricity bought on an overnight rate, both spent in the evening. What decides whether it pays is the usable capacity, the charge rate and the cycle life.

About the Huawei LUNA2000 Smart String ESS

The LUNA2000 is built around pack-level optimisation: every 5 kWh module has its own optimiser, so the weakest module does not drag the stack down and modules of different ages can be mixed. Huawei rate the whole thing at a 100 % depth of discharge.

One power module carries one to three battery modules, so a system runs from 5 to 15 kWh and, with two systems in parallel, to 30 kWh. The power module is 12 kg and each battery module 50 kg, which is why it is a two-person lift rather than a crane job.

IP66, floor standing as standard with a wall mount option, natural convection under 29 dB.

This is a Huawei Smart String ESS: 5 kWh battery modules stacked under a power module that optimises each one.

LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0. Two battery terminals per inverter; maximum charge 21 kW on a single string or 25 kW across two; maximum operating current 26.25 A per string.

The details that decide whether this battery suits the system:

  • One LUNA2000-5KW-C0 power module per system, carrying one to three LUNA2000-5-E0 battery modules. The bare battery module will not run without a power module.
  • Maximum output is 2.5 kW with one module and 5 kW with two or three; peak is 3.5 kW and 7 kW respectively, for ten seconds.
  • System voltage depends on the inverter: 360 V nominal and 350 – 560 V on a single-phase system, 600 V nominal and 600 – 980 V on three phase.
  • Up to two systems in parallel, 30 kWh.
  • 670 mm wide and 150 mm deep at any size; height is 600 mm at one module, 960 mm at two and 1,320 mm at three, with the floor stand included in the 63.8, 113.8 and 163.8 kg weights.
  • Charge and discharge derate between −10 and +5 °C and between 45 and 55 °C.
  • RS485 and CAN, the latter for parallel operation. Modules are auto-detected.
  • The storage system is ordered as power module and battery modules with the matching quantities — check the Package Contents block on this page for what ships.

Questions we get asked about this inverter

Can I buy just the battery module?

You can, and we sell it, but it will not run on its own: a system needs one LUNA2000-5KW-C0 power module as well. The 5, 10 and 15 kWh packs include one.

How much of it can I use?

All of it. Huawei rate the system at a 100 % depth of discharge.

How big can it get?

Three battery modules on one power module, and two systems in parallel — 30 kWh.

Why does one module only give 2.5 kW?

Output scales with the stack: 2.5 kW at one module and 5 kW at two or three, peaking at 3.5 and 7 kW for ten seconds.

Can it go outside?
