Huawei SUN2000 MB0 Smart Energy Controller — Two battery towers, four PV inputs and 21 kg — the three-phase Huawei that most UK commercial storage is built on.

A hybrid inverter does three jobs a string inverter cannot. It converts solar DC to AC; it charges and discharges a battery on the DC side, which avoids the double conversion an AC-coupled battery pays for; and, with the right hardware alongside it, it can keep part of the house alive when the grid fails.

About the Huawei SUN2000 MB0 Smart Energy Controller

Huawei call this a Smart Energy Controller rather than a hybrid inverter, and the name is fair: it is the controller for a system that grows. Two battery terminals take up to two LUNA2000 towers of three modules each, and three units can be paralleled, so a site can start at 15 kW with 5 kWh and finish somewhere very different without changing the inverter.

It is 21 kg, which for a 25 kW three-phase hybrid is remarkable and means one person can hang it. IP66, smart air cooling, and AFCI arc fault protection as standard rather than as an option.

The optimiser story is optional here rather than compulsory. Huawei optimisers (SUN2000-450W-P2, 600W-P, MERC-1100W-P and MERC-1300W-P) can be fitted per module where shading or module-level shutdown matters, and left out where they do not.

This inverter takes Huawei Smart String ESS, 600 – 980 V.

This model has a battery voltage window of 600 – 980 V.

This rule applies to the SUN2000-12/15/17/20/25K-MB0.

LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0. Two battery terminals per inverter; maximum charge 21 kW on a single string or 25 kW across two; maximum operating current 26.25 A per string.

What we stock that fits this inverter:

Low voltage and high voltage batteries are not interchangeable. A 48 V battery cannot be used on a high-voltage hybrid and a high-voltage stack cannot be used on a low-voltage one, whatever a general compatibility list says, and no adapter changes that. Solis put it plainly on their own list: installing a non-compatible battery will void the inverter warranty. If you are not certain, ask us and we will check it against your part number before you order.

String design, battery limits and what is in the box

The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:

  • There is no backup output on the inverter itself. Backup needs a Huawei Backup Box B1 for a three-phase system, or a SmartGuard, bought separately.
  • Battery is the LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 on a 600 – 980 V window. Two terminals, 26.25 A per string, maximum charge 21 kW on one string or 25 kW across two.
  • Two MPP trackers with four inputs in total, 30 A per MPPT with two strings or 20 A with one, 40 A short circuit.
  • 1,100 V maximum input, 200 V start-up, 200 – 1,000 V MPPT window. The full-load window is narrower and rises with the model: 410 – 800 V on the 15 kW and 20 kW, 530 – 800 V on the 25 kW.
  • Up to three units in parallel with the Smart String ESS.
  • 546 × 460 × 241.5 mm and 21 kg. IP66, smart air cooling, operating to +60 °C and 4,000 m with derating above 2,000 m.
  • Communication is RS485 as standard; WLAN and Ethernet through the Smart Dongle-WLAN-FE, or 4G through the Smart Dongle-4G, both optional.
  • Optimisers are optional: SUN2000-450W-P2, SUN2000-600W-P, MERC-1100W-P and MERC-1300W-P are the compatible parts.

Questions we get asked about this inverter

Does it provide backup power in an outage?

Not on its own. The MB0 has no backup output built in — you need a Huawei Backup Box B1 for three phase, or a SmartGuard, installed alongside it. Budget for that at quotation stage rather than after the power cut.

Which battery does it take?

The Huawei LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0, on a 600 – 980 V high-voltage window. There are two terminals, so two towers of up to three modules each can be connected to one inverter.

Do I have to fit optimisers?

No. Unlike some platforms, Huawei optimisers are optional on this inverter. Fit them where shading, module-level monitoring or module-level shutdown matter.

How many can I parallel?

Up to three units with the Smart String ESS.

What is the difference between this and a plain SUN2000 inverter?

The MB0 is the storage version: it has the battery terminals and the energy management to charge and discharge a LUNA tower. A plain SUN2000 is grid-tied only.
