Overview

About the Solis S6 Dual MPPT

A second MPP tracker is the single most useful upgrade on a British roof, and the reason is geometry rather than electronics. Very few UK houses offer one clean, unshaded, south-facing pitch. Most offer two pitches at different angles, or one pitch with a chimney, a dormer or a neighbour's tree across part of it. Wire that array as a single string and every panel is dragged down to the performance of the worst one.

The Solis S6 Dual MPPT range gives each pitch, or each shaded group, its own tracker and its own maximum power point. East and west arrays generate independently across the day, and a shaded group no longer taxes the clear one. In practice that is the difference between a roof being worth doing and being marginal.

The range runs from 2.5 kW to 6 kW in seven steps, all in the same 310 × 543 × 160 mm case at 11 to 12 kg, all IP66, and all with integrated AFCI arc-fault detection. The larger models accept up to 14 A per tracker, which is enough headroom for current large-format and bifacial modules rather than only for the 400 W panels of a few years ago.

For the installer

String design, certification and what is in the box

The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:

  • Two independent MPP trackers, one string each, 14 A per tracker — sized for modern high-current modules including bifacial.
  • Integrated AFCI (activation required) and integrated Export Power Manager.
  • The SKUs we stock include the integrated DC switch, so no separate rooftop or wall isolator is needed.
  • G98 and G99 certified with EN 50549-1; the certificates are attached to the listing.
  • The 4 kW to 6 kW models start at 120 V with a 90 – 520 V MPPT window; the 2.5 kW and 3 kW start at 60 V with a 50 – 450 V window, which allows notably shorter strings on small pitches.
Applications

Where this inverter earns its place

The S6 Dual MPPT is specified most often for these jobs.

East–west split roofsOne tracker per pitch, generating independently morning and evening.
Partly shaded arraysIsolate the shaded group on its own tracker so it cannot pull the clear string down.
Mixed panel countsTwo strings of unequal length are fine when each has its own tracker.
Standard 4 kW domestic installsThe 3.6 kW and 4 kW models are the volume choice for a typical UK semi.
Retrofit and extensionAdd a second orientation to an existing array without redesigning the first.
Trade rolloutsPallet quantities available for installers running repeat house types.
Battery and storage

Can I add a battery to this?

This is a grid-tied PV inverter. It converts solar DC into AC for the property and the grid, and it has no battery port. That is not a shortcoming — it is the right architecture for a system without storage, and it is why it costs what it does.

If storage is on the roadmap, you have two routes. Add an AC-coupled battery system alongside this inverter later, which works with any PV inverter and needs no change to what is already installed. Or choose a hybrid inverter now and pay for a battery port you will use in a year or two. We are happy to talk that trade-off through before you order.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked about this inverter

What does a second MPPT actually gain me?

On a genuinely single-orientation, unshaded roof, nothing. On a split or partly shaded roof it is typically a double-digit percentage of annual yield, because each string finds its own optimum instead of being averaged with the other.

Can I put both strings on one tracker?

You can, but then you have bought a dual-tracker inverter and used it as a single. If both pitches face the same way with the same shading it makes no difference; if they do not, split them.

Do I still need optimisers?

Usually not. Two trackers handle two orientations or one shaded group. Optimisers earn their money when shading is per-panel and moves across the array — a chimney shadow tracking across a roof through the day, for instance.

Is the DC isolator included?

Yes on the models we stock. It is integrated in the inverter.

Is it battery ready?

No. This is a grid-tied PV inverter with no battery port. If storage is on the roadmap, either plan an AC-coupled battery or choose a hybrid inverter now.

How loud is it?

It is convection cooled with no fan, so effectively silent. It can go on a hallway or bedroom wall without complaint.
