Fox ESS 5kW F Series 1PH Dual Tracker PV Inverter

Fox ESS · F Series

Fox ESS 5kW F Series 1PH Dual Tracker PV Inverter

Fox ESS F Series — Dual tracker, 3 kW to 6 kW, and upgradeable to storage later.

The F Series is Fox ESS's dual-MPPT single-phase range, and its distinguishing feature is that it is battery ready: paired with a Fox ESS charge controller it becomes a storage system without replacing the inverter. For a customer who wants solar now and a battery when the budget allows, that removes the usual penalty of buying twice.

Overview

About the Fox ESS F Series

Two independent trackers with one string each handle the split and shaded roofs that dominate the UK housing stock, and a 120 V start-up with an 80 – 550 V MPPT window keeps string design flexible on awkward pitches.

It is 402 × 476.5 × 148 mm and 15.5 kg — a solid wall unit rather than a pocket one — rated IP65, convection cooled and quoted under 30 dB, so it is at home in a garage, utility room or outside wall.

For the installer

String design, certification and what is in the box

The details that decide whether this unit suits the job:

  • Two independent MPP trackers, one string each, 12.5 A per tracker and 15 A Isc.
  • Battery ready: add a Fox ESS charge controller later rather than replacing the inverter.
  • DC switch and surge protection are options on this range — check the SKU before you quote an isolator.
  • G98 and G99 both certified, plus EN 50549-1 and VDE-AR-N 4105.
  • RS485, meter/CT and DRM as standard; LAN, Wi-Fi, GPRS or 4G monitoring optional.
Applications

Where this inverter earns its place

The F Series is specified most often for these jobs.

Standard UK domestic installs3.6 kW to 5 kW covers the overwhelming majority of house roofs.
Split-orientation roofsOne tracker per pitch.
Solar now, battery laterBattery-ready with a Fox charge controller, so the first install is not wasted.
Partly shaded arraysIsolate the shaded group on its own tracker.
Self-consumption upgradesThe 5 kW and 6 kW models suit homes that have added a heat pump or EV.
Battery and storage

Can I add a battery to this?

This is a grid-tied PV inverter. It converts solar DC into AC for the property and the grid, and it has no battery port. That is not a shortcoming — it is the right architecture for a system without storage, and it is why it costs what it does.

If storage is on the roadmap, you have two routes. Add an AC-coupled battery system alongside this inverter later, which works with any PV inverter and needs no change to what is already installed. Or choose a hybrid inverter now and pay for a battery port you will use in a year or two. We are happy to talk that trade-off through before you order.

Things worth knowing about this listing

These notes come from us and from the manufacturer, and they are the ones that most often cause a problem after delivery:
  • You must register the installation with Fox ESS online to activate the 10 year product warranty. Without registration it is 5 years as standard. See the warranty document in the Documents tab for the registration link and the full terms.

Frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked about this inverter

What does 'battery ready' actually mean here?

It means you can add a Fox ESS charge controller and a battery to the DC side later, rather than replacing the inverter with a hybrid. It is not the same as a hybrid inverter with a built-in battery port — there is an extra box — but it does protect the original investment.

Which model for a typical 4 kW array?

The F3600 if you are notifying under G98 and want to stay under 3.68 kW, or the F4600 / F5000 if you are applying under G99 and want the headroom.

Is the DC isolator included?

It is an option on this range. Confirm the SKU or budget for an external isolator.

How does it compare to the newer G3?

The G3 is the current generation with a higher 600 V input, wider MPPT window, 20 A per tracker and 97.6 % peak efficiency. The original F Series is still a sound unit and is often the value choice.
