A home battery stores the solar your house does not use at the moment it is generated, and gives it back in the evening. What decides whether that is worth doing is not the headline capacity but three numbers together: how much of the pack you may actually use, how fast it will charge and discharge, and how many cycles it is good for.

About the Enphase IQ Battery 5P

The IQ Battery 5P is an all-in-one AC-coupled system: 5.0 kWh usable, 3.2 kVA continuous, with six IQ8D-BAT microinverters and the battery management built into the same enclosure. Because it is AC coupled it retrofits to a house that already has solar of any brand, and it does not oblige you to replace a working string inverter.

It is passively cooled with no fans, IP55 outdoors, and the microinverter enclosure inside is IP67. Enphase warrant it to more than 60 % capacity for up to fifteen years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first.

Round-trip efficiency is 96 % on the DC side and 90 % AC to AC at half power — the AC figure is the honest one to compare against a DC-coupled battery, which avoids one conversion.

Which inverter will run this battery?

This is an AC-coupled battery with six IQ8D-BAT microinverters inside it.

This is the one battery on this page that does not care what inverter your solar runs through. It is AC coupled: the six IQ8D-BAT microinverters inside it do their own DC to AC conversion and it connects to the consumer unit rather than to a hybrid inverter. What it does need is an Enphase IQ Gateway with CTs, and the Communications Kit 2 INT for the wired link between them.

The details that decide whether this battery suits the system:

  • AC coupled. It needs an IQ Gateway with current transformers, and the Enphase Communications Kit 2 INT for the wired control link.
  • 3.2 kVA continuous at 230 V, 13.9 A, single phase, with a 0.8 leading to 0.8 lagging adjustable power factor.
  • Usable capacity 5.0 kWh. Nominal DC voltage 76.8 V, LFP chemistry.
  • 980 × 550 × 188 mm (H × W × D). 66.3 kg to lift and 78.9 kg installed — the lifting handles are a separate accessory and worth having.
  • Wall mount hardware is included; the pedestal for floor mounting is sold separately.
  • Enclosure IP55, microinverters IP67, natural convection, altitude to 2,500 m. Charging −20 to +50 °C, discharging −20 to +55 °C, optimum 0 to 30 °C.
  • Grid compliance is quoted as G98, G98 NI, G99, G99 NI and G100.

Questions we get asked about this inverter

Do I need a special inverter for it?

No, and that is the point. It is AC coupled with its own microinverters inside, so it works alongside solar of any brand. You do need an Enphase IQ Gateway with CTs and the Communications Kit 2 INT.

How much power will it deliver?

3.2 kVA continuously at 230 V. That runs a normal house's base load comfortably; a shower or an oven on full will exceed it.

What is the warranty?

More than 60 % of capacity for up to fifteen years or 6,000 cycles, whichever comes first, subject to Enphase's terms.

Is it as efficient as a DC-coupled battery?

Not quite, and the datasheet is straight about it: 96 % DC round trip but 90 % AC to AC at half power, because the energy is converted twice. What you gain is that it works with any existing system.

Can it go outside?

Yes. The enclosure is IP55 and the microinverters inside are IP67, with no fans to fail.
